What's your favorite Bollywood movie?

topic posted Wed, September 22, 2004 - 4:20 PM by  Samantha
For me it's currently a toss up between "Devdas" and "Khabi Kushie Khabi Gham."

Devdas is so opulent and poignant and tragic. It's also a complete visual feast. Madhuri Dixit is my #1 favorite Bollywood actress... her presence and dance ability are so amazing. She is perfect as Chandramukhi. Aishwarya Rai makes a wonderful contrast as Paro and I love seeing them dance together. "Dola Re" has got to be one of the coolest dance numbers filmed in any country. Shahrukh just seethes with broody darkness like the title character should, and yet he's so cute dancing drunk in "Chalak Chalak." The sexuality running under the surface of the connection between Paro and Devdas borders on BDSM in my little Western-conditioned mind and it's super sexy.

K3G, though, just wrenches your heart. Gods, I swear I cried through fully half that movie (which makes it about 90 minutes of straight tears). Kareena Kapoor usually makes my teeth itch but she's cute in this movie. Hrithik Roshan's dancing is eye-popping and the chemistry between Shahrukh and Kajol is electric. If you like to watch the guys dance, this is the movie for you. It has to be seen to be believed.

Anyone else?

Hi!I'm happy to find your tribe! Just checked out your website, it looks great! I wish I lived in AZ so I could see you guys perform! and take classes! I'm the only non-Indian I know of that's into Bollywood here. Ok, to answer the question though, favorite Bwood movie... I liked Ashoka, Mission Kasmir, Devdas, and Fiza(just for Mehboob Mere). Those are amongst my favs that come to mind for now.

I haven't seen Fiza... thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to check it out!

As for taking classes, just convince your local dance studio/troupe that they want to fly me out there for workshops! I am teaching Bollywood in Sacramento this month, in San Diego in February and in Philadelphia in April. I would love to come to Florida and the other members of Domba also have cool styles they teach (Tribal sword, Tribal skirt, spicy tribal combos, tribal candles and floorwork, etc.).

In any case, it's nice to meet you.

I just finished watching Lagaan, and it takes it for me. I found that while the costumes were not as flashy as many Bollywood they were still lovely. The story is fabulous and had me laughing and hoping with a full heart. Gracey is not my favorite performer but in this she is charming and really great as Gauri.
    The characters are simply great.
The music, as always, inspired me to move and at points were very passionate and while I didn't find it as dance intensive as other movies I really enjoyed, and learned, from what was there.

For me its tied between Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
I also really liked Asoka. I havent had the opportunity to see K3G yet, but its on my list. so is Lagaan.

Also, Sam, i have to say i was completely giddy when you guys did Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka at Boom Boom Bellyfest. i was in the front row singing all the words :)
I just about died when you said you had taught it at the workshop that morning, i live in Tucson and couldnt make it up there that early.

Well, I also haven't seen enough to make an educated decision, but of the 10 or so I've seen so far Devdas and Asoka were my favorites. I have yet to watch a Bollywood film that didn't make me cry for almost the whole 3-4 hours, especially Devdas.

Just watched Kal Ho Naa Ho (Tomorrow may never come) this weekend and that was good, I wasn't prepared for the twist in that one (yes, more tears). I look forward to watching more and finding new favorites!

Ooh, great thread to jump in. Currently, and probably for a long time to come, my favorite is "Swades" followed very closely by "Paheli" and of course, "Veer-Zaara." After those, I'd have to recommend others I've already seen mentioned here -- except, I think you've missed "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" which is also wonderful. I also love any that have colorful, ethnically-inspired dance numbers (usually at least one out of six will, thank goodness.)

I just saw a great bolly film, but there was no dancing numbers like most of the ones listed already. This one has to do with the freedom fighters. It really was a great movie. Bollywood seems to be succeeding in their moving to films without the glitz and glamour.
Rang de Basanti is the name of the film. Aamir Khan plays one of the leading roles.
I normally don't like movies like this, but it was really well done. I left with my heart tender and a good education.

I was flippin channels a few weeks ago and came across "Lagaan: Once upon a time in India". It's pretty long,(3+hrs), but I thought it was really good. The plot was a little strange at first but once you get involved with the story it's hard to turn it off. Aamir Khan is the lead role in it as well. Very intriguing to watch. Don't ya just love to root for the good guys?? :)

I have to agree with Samatha, Devdas and Khabi Kushie Khabi Gham are woderful for sexy Shahrukh-ness and the casts of perfection. Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai dancing classical bollywood style together!!!! Of course Bride and Preudice is wonderful because it makes you feel like you too could be in such a romance.

Devdas is #1 for me!! I've seen it completely through at least 5 times....cry hysterically EVERY time!
      Also good:
      Lajja
      Lagaan

I have seen *numerous* Bollywood films...but all the titles slip by me right now.
      Bollywood rocks.

Wow! I can't believe I missed this thread. Damn real life for getting in the way all the time! ;)

Ooh, I agree with almost all your points about Devdas. It's a stunning piece of art. The music is magical. The cinematography is stunning and it is just beautiful with every frame. I spent a good chunk of it in tears. The performances are amazing. I think my favourite performance has to be (excuse my for referring to the characters rather than the actors' names) Paro's mother. She totally captured my attention and I love her song and response during what she thinks is the marriage party. Poor Paro. Poor Devdas. I just love everything about that film. It is quite rare to have a film with so much beauty and so much substance. As for the music and dancing - AMAZING choreography. Your summation of Aishwarya and Madhuri is so true. They are so very different, but compliment each other very well in their big number at the house. Amazing. :)

I love K3G as well, but I've only seen it once. So I will reserve any further comments until I have more time to digest and savour it.

I was surprised at how much I liked Dhoom! It's so cheeky. As soon as I heard that it was a Bollywood motorcycle film, I laughed my arse off. But it totally works. I think maybe the policeman is more a cardboard cut-out than an actor, but everyone else I thoroughly enjoyed in it. Some cute little cheeky numbers in it as well. :)

I adore Lagaan. I think maybe it's because it was my first Bollywood addiction. I caught half of it being shown on TV here. But I missed the second half (it was shown in two parts). I went out and bought it the next day and watched the rest. I couldn't wait! I love it. I'm aware that it may be more geared for the West. But it also appeals because my husband loves cricket. There are again some great songs in it and I quite like the culture clashes highlighted in it.

I think I've waffled enough. *hug* Let me know any new hot film tips! :) I've been recommended a new one, but can't remember the name off the top of my head. I know it starts with an A! *for shame* I'll ask my friend what the name was again - so I can pass it on.

Although I've listened to Bhangra for some time, I've only gotten into Bollywood. My favorites thus far are "Lagaan" and "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham".

I simply ADORE the music and dancing in "Lagaan"!! I love the more traditional flavor of the choreography. Not to say the dancing in K3G isn't fantastic as well in a more contemporary setting. My 14 yr old daughter really gets into Hrithik Roshan. Ok...so does mom! : )

My 12 yr old son has a crush on "Pooja" and he even cried during the more emotional scenes. "Mom....it's so sad!!" : ' (

We have become a family with an addiction.....

I looks as if my next rental/purchase will be "Devdas". : )

My favorite is Khalnayak with Madhuri Dixit... although if I ever get a hold of the Telugu film wth the dancing cows it may beat Khalnayak out as number one. :-)

      Someone mentioned Monsoon Wedding above.....
Monsoon is around 75% english and the 25% Hindi is subtitled...so no real need for subtitles, though they are in there.
It's a fantastically traditional movie!! No Bollywood performances, but a GREAT soundtrack.
      The character Dubei is hilarious!!

And, ditto the comment on Paro's mother's performance in her big scene in Devdas!!!!!! How utterly powerful! ......the passion of a mother.......

What a great topic! I’m a huge Bollywood film fan. As a caucasian woman, I was never exposed to any Hindi or other Indian films until a friend (who adores Shahruhk Khan) took me to see one almost 3 years ago. When I heard the music and saw the dances, I was hooked. I’ve seen a lot of films since then, been Bhangra dancing a few times at a club and have been a regular at a Bollywood dance class in NYC. I love the combination of the traditional and more modern moves with the fun music.

        Here are my favorite movies:

Lagaan – wonderful story, good acting and Aamir Khan is great

Umrao Jaan – the version with Rehka – has some absolutely gorgeous dances

Bunty aur Babli – very cute with great songs and dances

Minsara Kanavu – Tamil film (Sapnay is the Hindi version) – has the fabulous Prabhu Deva dancing and doing choreography. Kajol is excellent in this.

Monsoon Wedding – soon to be a classic – Vijay Raaz is an amazing, stage-trained character actor who is a joy to watch

Other films well worth watching – Dil Se, Bombay, Sarfarosh, Dil Jo Bhi Kahey, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Akele Hum Akele Tum, and Bawarchi

Has anyone checked Netflix for Bollywood movies?

I believe I stumbled across some the other day, but not knowing any titles, I couldn't tell you which ones were there (if any).....

    Just a thought.

Netflix and Blockbuster online both have a wide selection of Bollywood, actually. It's worth checking out if you have a membership and are interested. Unfortunately, they don't have a Bollywood section, but you can search by title or by actor and follow the links.

Oh man, I have to pick just one?

I agree with Samantha, Devdas is an absolutely goreous film and "Dola Re" is one of the best dance numbers (better even than my other favorites, "Maahi Ve" from Kal Ho Naa Ho, "Bhumbro" from Mission Kashmir and "Kajra Re" from Bunty aur Babli). And Khabi Kushie Khabi Gham still makes me cry even though I've seen it a million times.

I have to say my favorite Bollywood film is "Kal Ho Naa Ho." It's so cheesey, but so heart-rending. Also up there on my list: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, K3G and Veer-Zaara. All of those are classics in my book.

"Taal" is a good 90s classic, as is "Hum Aapke Hain Koun!" I thought "Hum Tum" was really cute. So was "Paheli," which has the incredibly sexy song Dhire Jalna.

I also really liked "Sholay" the so-called curry western. It's an oldy but a goody. And young Amitabh? Yummy!

I’m adding some suggestions from this thread to my future viewing list. I haven’t seen “Fiza,” or “Khalnayak.” “Rang De Basanti” and “Lajja” should be coming from Netflix soon.

I’m getting a few others from Netflix and I was wondering if anyone has seen them and could tell me if they’re good or not: I’m getting “Black” first, which I’ve heard from friends is good. Then “Saagar,” and “Satte Pe Satta.” Any opinions? Has anyone seen “Bobby” or “Saathiya?”

Also, for those who like the move away from glitz and glamor, “Mr. And Mrs. Iyer” is supposed to be a good artsy Indian indie. I haven’t seen it, but I hear it’s good.

Phew! I just read through all the posts and can't belive no one even mentioned Paheli. If you love Shahruhk Khan, then you must watch this film. You have him, times two! It is simply adorable and the dancing sequences are colorful and just makes you want to jump up and dance along...which I have done on plenty of occassions much to my roomate's distress. Definitely worth checking out, you will be guaranteed to have a good laugh and a good cry before everything is over.

I do agree with Samantha on Devdas, though. The chemistry is unbeliable between Shahruhk and Aishwarya, though I must say that our leading ladies definitely carried the movie more than our tragic hero. I have watched the dances over and over again stunned at the beauty of the movements.

I watched Bunty Aur Babli and was pleasantly surprised when Aishwarya made an appearance with that fabulous dance scene. The movie just turned a horrible morning into a pleasant day. Kept a smile on my face all day and made me wish to learn Bollywood style dancing more than ever.

All in all, I have watched over 60 Bollywood movies this year alone (just counted them from my list on Netflix) and more than two dozen are on my top best ever movies. If you want personal recommendations, I will gladly discuss these fantastic movies with anyone.

I can't read everyone elses without including my own! My first ever bollywood movie was Bride and Prejudice. GREAT for western audiences to give them a taste of the drug! Then, I took a class with Sam in Indiana and had to find MORE. I watched K3G and cried and laughed and cried the whole way through. My sweatshirt sleeves were SOAKED! Then, I saw a silly one about 'the Don's' or gangsters with all the same actors in all the other movies....and recently Veer-Zaraah (sp?). That didn't have many dance sequences, but was worth it. So, my favorite according to 'watched many times' is Bride and Prejudice. My favorite according to emotions, K3G. Now, must get Lagaan and Devdas....

oh, i thought for sure id already posted here, but guess not.

I absolutely Love Paheli too, and my other top top favorite is Ashoka. Both are so gorgeous and dreamy because they are set in ancient time. The visuals are incredible beautiful, and then of course in both, there is Shahruhk!!!! Paheli is fairly light and playfull but wonderfuly romantic and passionate, but Ashoka just had me in tears. you have to see it.

Ok everybody wish me some luck running into him, im heading to bollywood in dec!!! ahh, that would just be so incredible!! at very least its nice to dream about!

browsing internet for shahrukh khan blogs I came across this, today, so a little late joining in.

I'm a caucasian woman married 20 years to an Indian, and totally mad about Hindi films especially some SRK films, he's mesmerising. I fell for him watching Dilse, but my favourites of the relatively small number I've watched (compared to number he has made) are Asoka and the glorious Devdas. He's so hot in the first!

A little idiotic here but what does K2G stand for?

"Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" = K3G

"Ankur" is also VERY GOOD!!!! There isn't any music nor dancing in this film. The subject matter revolves round the caste system. Have your hankies nearby...

                          My faves?

Dil Se was the first I ever saw, and what a tragic ending! I didn't expect it and was totally numb with shock at the end. Not on my top 10 though, but the dance sequence on the train was cool!

Veer Zaara...what a love story! When she walks into the courtroom in the end! ooooohhhhhh...I was wailing!!!! On my top 10

Paheli, was nice. Good soundtrack..but still not in my top 10...

Chalte Chalte, my all time favorite! When she is packing to leave him, and they cut into the title track...my walls were shaking with my sobbing and wailing!!! my #1.

Monsoon Wedding...The best was the sub-love story, Dubei and the housekeeper...My 10 yr old daughter didn't care about the main couple..we cared about Dubei! When he knocked on her door and we thought he gave up and went away, and she opened the door and saw him with his offerings....WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I was balling like a baby!!!

Older movies are nice too Gals (and guys)...I don't have the names, but going back to the 70's and 80's is a real treat. RD Burman and Lata etc soundtracks... <sigh>...very sweet

have glass of wine with the one you love, light some candles and dim the lights and put on an old Lata M. Cd and ....romance at its sweetest!

Our anniversary is coming up. He is in India visiting his family right now. We are the living people of Chalte Chalte...we are fighting now.
He even left on a plane and didn't say goodbye, but I didn't chase him-like the movie.

But if when he comes back, we are reunited, I am taking him to a cabin up in the mtns. and lots of candles, and lots of Lata cds, and really good red wine and some sweet homemade indian snacks...and teach him to dance and celebrate 2 years. I cannot wait....when I look at him, even after 2 years, it is still like the Chalte scene where Sharukh meets his gal for the first time. The breeze..the sunlight....
"hey heeeey....la la la la la...hey heeeey...mmm...mmm...mmm...mmm...mmm.....la la la...hey hey hey..

<sigh> I wish I could hold his face in my hands right now, and kiss his sweet forehead...

I seem like the exact sucker for bollywood!...lol...
                          such a sap!

I love that scene in Monsoon Wedding. They were my favorite couple!

The first Bollywood movie I saw was Kyun Ho Gaya Na, with Vivek Oberoi and Aishwarya Rai. I looved it. Although it did not prepare me for the tragedy of Tere Naam. Sorry, did I spoil it?
